Retail representative group objects to Athenry discount foodstore

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans for a discount store in Athenry have hit a stumbling block.
RGDATA – the representative association for independent grocery shops, convenience stores and supermarkets in Ireland, has lodged an appeal against the development to An Bord Pleanála.
JJ Brady had been granted planning permission by the County Council for the discount foodstore at Church Street, Raheen, Athenry with 15 conditions attached.
However, RGDATA argues that the Retail Impact Statement supplied as part of the application fails to show if the discount foodstore would have an adverse impact on existing centres.
The County Council previously passed a material contravention of the Athenry Local Area Plan to change the zoning of the site of the proposed foodstore from Business and Enterprise to commercial.
RGDATA argues that having to change the zoning is “in itself an indication that the land use plan for the area does not support the development.”
Thousands of Athenry residents already signed a petition in support of the new discount foodstore.
A decision is expected from An Bord Pleanála in October.
