Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans for a licenced discount foodstore in Knocknacarra have been turned down.
RGDATA, the representative group for grocery outlets has been successful in its appeal to the higher planning authority.
The Lidl store had been planned for a site adjacent to Blake roundabout at Ballymoneen Road and Western Distributor Road.
Florence Thomas had originally been granted planning permission by the city council for the single-storey discount foodstore and off-licence.
RGDATA appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála arguing that there is no need for such a large single-use store in the western suburbs.
An Bord Pleanála has decided to overturn the local authority’s decision and has now refused planning permission.
It states that it’s not satisfied that the master plan shows adequate means of providing for future development of a neighbourhood centre south of the proposed discount store.
Also An Bord Pleanála says that having regard to planning permission recently granted in the area, it’s not satisfied that a case has been made for this type of retail facility.
