Oughterard Courthouse to re-open after major refurbishment

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Oughterard Courthouse is set to re-open following extensive refurbishment works worth over half a million euro.
The building held its last sitting in 2008 – which was prematurely adjourned by Judge Mary Fahy over the terrible conditions at the courthouse.
The last sitting of Oughterard Courthouse was a cold, wet and windy day on the 8th of January, 2008.
Conditions were evidently little better inside than they were outside – a pool of water stood inside the door of the courthouse, and there was no heating in the building.
Judge Mary Fahy told those in attendance that she was leaving the building just moments after her arrival – and her departure marked the end of court sessions in Oughterard.
The Courthouse is now set to reopen following extensive refurbishment works, which were completed in November at a cost of 600 thousand euro.
The building, which dates back to the 1840’s, is now being described as a ‘state of the art’ facility – and even boasts the original judges chair, which was donated locally.
The building will be re-opened by Judge Mary Fahy on the 8th of January at 7pm – eight years to the day that she left the building over the poor conditions.
