It’s been revealed that the number of patients on trolleys at University Hospital Galway increased by almost 25 percent last year.
There were 6,514 people awaiting a hospital bed during 2015 – a significant increase on the figure of 5,312 for 2014.
It means that despite a number of measures introduced by Leo Varadkar to tackle the crisis, last years figure for UHG is on par with the figure for 2011.
The report from the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation also shows that since 2006, UHG has experienced a 400 percent increase in overcrowding.
The publication also reveals that figures at Portiuncula rose by 10 percent last year, with 1,100 awaiting beds compared with 912 in 2014.
That figure means that 2015 is the worst year on record for Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
Nationally, Beaumont Hospital in Dublin is the worst offender, with 8,243 patients awaiting a bed last year.
General Secretary of the INMO Liam Doran says the figures paint a particularly bleak picture for University Hospital Galway.
