Galway By fm newsroom – The N18 between Ardrahan and Kilcolgan has reopened following a fatal crash overnight.
The 2-vehicle crash happened about 2 kilometres the Galway side of Ardrahan shortly after 12.30 this morning.
The driver of one of the cars was arrested at the scene but has since been released.
A 66-year-old male pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car on the N18.
It’s understood he had been ‘missing’ from a local nursing home since last evening and gardaí had been looking for him at the time.
The car also struck the parked garda car injuring two gardaí who were outside the car at the time talking to the pedestrian.
They were taken to University Hospital Galway where their injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.
The body of the pensioner was also taken to UHG.
The driver of one of the cars, a man in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and was taken to Gort garda station and was later released.
A team from An Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is now carrying out an investigation into the incident.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them at Gort garda station on 091 63 64 00.
