Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s claimed that a Traveller family, illegally encamped in Knocknacarra, has turned down offers of housing.
Councillor Donal Lyons says a recent meeting at City Hall was told that the family has twice turned down offers of housing – and four more at the site have not registered as homeless.
Previously, Galway Traveller Movement said that the 10 families encamped near Millar’s Lane and the Hibernia building have registered as homeless with Galway City Council.
It’s understood that 20 adults and 15 children are currently living at the site.
The controversial situation is set to dominate a meeting of the Local Traveller Accomodation Committee which will take place at City Hall on Monday.
Margaret O’ Riada of Galway Traveller Movement says the site is a serious health and safety concern – and she’ll be looking into the installation of portaloos at the site.
