Galway Bay fm newsroom – People wishing to build new houses on family lands in South Connemara may be hindered from doing so for years as areas set aside for possible new roads are blocked out from planning permission.
Connemara area Councillors were told by County Council engineers yesterday that the seven route would have to remain in place until a final decision is made about the Galway City bypass.
The South Connemara road project has cost €3m. in consultancy fees and seven possible routes have been identified.
However, the roads authorities have decided that no one route can be selected until a final decision is made about the Galway City bypass.
Each route freezes a 250 metres wide area of land from development – meaning there is a mile wide restriction along Furbo, Spiddal and Cois Fharraige.
Councillor Seán Ó Tuairisg made a strong plea yesterday to have the routes removed from the map in south Connemara until the money for the project is clearly available.
He said there are now several instances of local people being debarred from planning permission and facing the prospect of leaving the Gaeltacht.
His demand was supported by Councillors Tom Curran, Seosamh Ó Cualáin and others.
But Senior Engineer, John Leahy said the final decision on the Galway bypass would have to be awaited.
