The City Council has warned motorists that the traffic lights at the Newcastle junction with Quincentenary Bridge are likely to be out of action for several days.

It’s expected to lead to serious traffic congestion in the city – the Solemn Novena begins tomorrow (Monday), and thousands of hurling supporters were in town today for the Galway v Cork match at Pearse Stadium.

Engineers are awaiting a replacement module for the traffic controller at the junction, after it was destroyed in a car crash in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the Council said it may be several days before the lights can be repaired.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the bridge and junction where at all possible. For safety reasons, traffic on the N6 approaches to the junction is filtered down to one lane before the lights.

In the meantime, the Council has requested that Gardaí be stationed at the junction to control traffic flow.

There were major tailback across the city today as a result, with the bridge completely backed up in both directions and heavy traffic inbound on the Tuam Road, Headford Road and Old Dublin Road, as well as around the Docks and in Salthill.
