The City Council has been forced to issue over one thousand apology letters following a significant financial data breach involving rate payers in the city.
The local authority says the blunder was due to a keying error – which saw one individual receive financial statements relating to almost 1,200 accounts.
Galway City Council was informed of the breach by the customer in question, who received statements for 1,171 rate payers in the city.
In a letter to an affected customer seen by Galway Bay fm news, the Council says the incident should not have happened, and offers its sincere apologies for the error.
It states that the recipient of the information has confirmed that the information was not shared with any other party and has now been destroyed.
However, the local authority is keen to point out that the information did not contain bank details – and instead held details of commercial rates and balances, which are a matter of public record at City Hall.
Galway City Council says that it has liaised with the Data Protection Commissioner over the breach – and has now introduced stricter controls to prevent any future recurrence.
