Galway Bay fm newsroom – River and coastal flooding in Galway city could be a thing of the past under a new programme being delivered by the Office of Public Works.
The CFRAM programme is currently carrying out a risk assessment of the city, with a view to seeking OPW funding for long-term flood defences.
Protective structures, accurate flooding forecasts and a higher level of preparation could help to protect the city against future flood events.
That’s according to Elizabeth Russell of JBA Consulting, who gave a presentation to the City Council on the CFRAM project this week.
The project takes into account the frequency and severity of flood events, while considering the possible future impact of climate change on sea levels.
Public consultations will be held in the coming months to gather information on possible solutions and the publics’ experience of flooding in the city.
It follows a series of similar public consultations held across the county as part of the CFRAM process.
A draft flood management plan for the city is expected to be available by the end of next year.
