A man in his 80s was killed in a crash on the Loughrea to Portumna Road this afternoon.
The single vehicle crash occurred at Ballydoogan at approximately 4.10pm, when the car collided with a tree.
The male driver – the sole occupant – was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.
This stretch of road (the N65 just past the junction with the Loughrea to Ballinasloe Rd – R446) was closed until 9.20pm to allow for the completion of an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions were in place.
Gardai have appealedl for witnesses to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091 842870.
