Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway Simon Community is warning that the spiralling housing crisis is leading to people becoming ‘trapped’ in homeless services.
The city-based charity says that over 30 of its clients are ready to move into independent living but remain stuck in the service due to a lack of options.
Galway Simon currently has 73 people in its housing services – meaning that almost half of those in supported housing are ready to leave but have nowhere to go.
The charity says rising rents and insufficient rent supplement and housing assistance payments are to blame – and the situation makes their work an impossible task.
The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Simon Coveney says he is working with local authorities to address the issue.
