Galway Bay fm newsroom – Up to 100 people have gathered at the Connacht Hotel in the city for an oral hearing on Apple’s plans for a 850 million euro data centre in Athenry.
The county council granted planning permission for the centre at Palmerstown, Tobberroe and Derrydonnell last September.
However, this decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by several groups including concerned residents of Lisheenkyle, and Athenry Golf Club.
The oral hearing is being overseen by An Bord Pleanala inspector Stephen Kay, and will also deal with a separate application for a 220kv electricity substation at the site.
12 groups or individuals who have made submissions or observations on the plans have indicated that they will speak at today’s proceedings, which will continue until 5pm.
The hearing is expected to continue until the end of the week.
