Galway County Council has issued a ban on swimming at Furbo Beach amid fears of serious contamination.
The local authority says that samples taken earlier this week show elevated levels of bacteria in the water, including EColi and Intestinal Enterococci.
It says that the heavy rainfall in the preceding days may have contributed to the bacteria levels and further investigations will be conducted.
In the meantime, signs have been erected warning visitors not to bath at the beach as swimming in the water may cause illness.
It’s expected that the ban will last about one week pending the results of further testing.
