Concern over increase in domestic violence in Galway

Gardaí have investigated over 170 reports of domestic violence so far this year.
New figures reveal that Gardaí have dealt with 19 breaches of barring, safety or protection orders since January.
They also attended a further 155 incidents during which no offence was disclosed.
The matter has been discussed at County Joint Policing Committee level, where Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh raised concerns over the number of victims who don’t press charges.
Gardaí say they are currently engaged in a pilot project, which sees officers conduct a series of follow-up visits to homes where a domestic incident has been reported.
A specially designated Garda also takes photos of evidence and injuries, so even if the victim does not press charges, they are kept on file in case of further incidents.
It’s hoped the scheme will be rolled out nationally in the coming months.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley says a large number of domestic incidents are related to alcohol.
