Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are calls for a new waste water treatment facility to serve East Galway and the industrial corridor between the city and Athenry town.
Galway Oireachtas members held a meeting with county council officials this week where the new plant was described as an absolute priority.
It comes as the treatment plant at Mutton Island is now operating at almost full capacity while the county’s population continues to grow.
A new plant is estimated to cost in the region of 20 million euro.
Galway East Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon says future economic development will be hampered without appropriate infrastructure along the industrial corridor between Oranmore and Athenry.
Deputy Cannon says capacity issues at Mutton Island have been flagged for 10 years now and Irish Water must prioritise the new plant.
He plans to raise the issue with Environment Minister Simon Coveney.
