The number of people on the Live Register across Galway is continuing to fall, with almost 13% fewer on the ‘dole’ since a year ago.

And unemployment figures have dropped by almost 32% since their peak almost five years ago.

According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office, there were 17,347 on the Live Register in the city and county in May of this year. That’s down 12.7% from 19,865 exactly one year earlier.

However, there was a month-on-month increase of 86 people (0.5%). The figures also show Galway is performing better than the State averages, which saw a 11.1% drop over the year, and a 0.6% increase year-on-year.

In Galway City, the figures show there were 8,847 on the Live Register – that’s down 12.3% from the 10,083 twelve months earlier.

However, there was a month-on-month increase of 1.9% (163 people) from the previous.

The biggest year-on-year drop recorded in unemployment in the county was in Tuam, down 14.9% (453 people) to 2,590; followed by Clifden at 14% (145 people) to 894; and Loughrea down 13.8% (295 people) to 1,841.

There was a 13% drop in the figure for Gort (170 people) to 1,140, while Ballinasloe was down 9.7% (219 people) to 2,035.

A break-down of the figures shows that the majority (58.6%) of those receiving unemployment benefits in Galway were male (10,172), while 7,175 were female.

Of those in receipt of benefits here, 87.7% (15,212) were over the age of 25, and the remainder (2,135) under 25.
