Evicted tenant returns armed with steel bar

A man who took issue with the tenants in the house he had been evicted from, went back to the address armed with a large steel bar, Galway District Court heard.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded the defendant in custody for the specific reason of getting him assessed by a psychiatrist.

“At the moment he can’t leave the country and he has nowhere to stay, he is homeless if he’s released,” she said.

Indian native, Mazor Singh (29), with no fixed abode, had expressed an interest in going home once the case was dealt with.

He is charged with having the weapon at the house in Grattan Park on May 6 last. He has been in custody since his arrest.

Sergeant Paul Duane told the court that Singh entered the rented home at 10pm that evening carrying the steel bar.

“He was previously a tenant, but was evicted,” he said of the defendant.

“He swung the bar towards one of the tenants, but he and another person removed it from him (Singh) and forcibly removed him from the house. He was found in the front garden of the house when Gardaí arrived, there was a small scissors in his hand and, after being directed by Gardaí, he put it down and was arrested.”

The court heard that he had been living in Ireland for eight years, and had no previous convictions.

His solicitor, Brian Gilmartin, said that there were “underlying difficulties” to explain his client’s actions.

“I would suggest that there was no great criminal intent, and he had resided there for a considerable time,” he said.

Judge Fahy said that it was a disgrace that a prisoner, having been referred for psychiatric assessment by his GP, had not been seen in the two months he was in custody. She remanded him in further custody for preparation of a report.

“I’m not mindful to keep him in custody – that’s not why I’m doing it – I just want him to be seen,” she explained to Mr Gilmartin.
