City public talk to debate fall-off in take up of HPV vaccine

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A public talk in the city today (23/08) is to debate a fall off in the number of girls availing of the HPV vaccine.
The vaccine, which aims to prevent cervical cancer, will be offered to around 30 thousand first year school girls this term as part of a national programme which began in 2010.
Latest HSE figures show that the number of students opting to receive the vaccine in the last academic year dropped by five thousand.
The drop-off that the vaccine can have negative impacts on health and well-being of some teenage girls.
The Irish Cancer Society is leading a talk in the city this evening which aims to inform parents about the vaccine with expert advice from a panel of speakers.
The ‘Decoding Cancer – the HPV vaccine’ discussion takes place in the Clayton Hotel at 6.30pm.
Robert O’Connor is Head of Research with the Irish Cancer Society – he says the talk aims to dispel myths surrounding the vaccine.
