Plans to carry out a new survey of swallow holes in South Galway has been branded ‘absolute nonsense.’
Loughrea area Councillor Joe Byrne says people across the region have suffered due to flooding for decades, and want action – not more reports.
He says councillors and the public are frustrated over the slow pace of delivery of flood mitigation works.
Cathaoirleach of the Loughrea district, Councillor Jimmy McClearn agreed, and said reports and assessments are being used as a ‘delay tactic.’
Director of Services Liam Gavin told Loughrea councillors that flood mitigation planning is a ‘slow and arduous process,’ and reports are necessary to find feasible solutions.
However, Councillor Joe Byrne said it’s action that’s needed, not more literature.
He says if the matter is not addressed before winter arrives, there will be ‘mutiny,’ and landowners will dig their own flood channels.
