Signage will be put up across the city and Salthill shortly which will enable Gardai to begin issuing on-the-spot fines to people caught drinking alcohol on the street.
The matter has been discussed at City Joint Policing Committee level.
Councillor Frank Fahy said public drinking in the city is ‘an embarrassment.’
He says tourists are commenting on the activity, which is reinforcing the belief that Ireland is a country with a major drinking problem.
Director of services Joe O’Neill told the meeting that signage will be erected shortly to inform the public that street drinking is illegal under City Council bylaws, and will incur an on-the-spot fine.
Once the new bilingual signs are up, Gardai will begin issuing tickets to those engaging in the activity.
Gardaí will also engage in an awareness campaign to let members of the public know that street drinking is illegal.
This will involve working with Galway’s Students’ Unions, and other relevant bodies and organisations.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley says street drinking remains a serious problem in the city, with ‘van loads’ of drink seized every week.
