The Health Minister is expected to officially announce plans for a new Emergency Department at UHG when he visits the facility on Monday.
The hospital’s day surgery, medical assessment unit and ED are ‘full to the brim’ this afternoon, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
71 patients are today waiting for admission on trolleys or in over-capacity wards.
The figure is even higher than the record number recorded at the hospital yesterday – leading to major fears for staff and patient safety.
The Department of Health has sent a special delivery unit into the hospital in a bid to help staff deal with the crisis.
Junior Minister and Galway West TD Sean Kyne says he expects Minister Harris to officially announce plans for a new emergency department during his visit next week.
Meanwhile, INMO spokesperson Anne Burke says a detailed and serious conversation is needed on how the acute hospital system deals with admissions.
She says industrial action is looking increasingly likely.
