Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans for a 15 thousand tonne deep sea fish farm in Galway Bay could be in doubt due to new guidelines published by the Government.
According to today’s Irish Times, the Marine Institute is recommending that offshore salmon farms should be capped at 7 thousand tonnes.
The recommendation is part of new draft plans for aquaculture development.
Minister for Marine, Simon Coveney has previously said that a decision on the fish farm near Inis Oírr would be made soon, but to date there has been no movement on a decision.
The Minister says he has been awaiting the advice of the Marine Institute on the proposal for a licence for the Galway Bay fish farm.
Minister Coveney also says he would be seeking stakeholder views on all 24 actions and initiatives in the draft strategy and would consider all views, including the proposed scale limits.
Bord Iascaigh Mhara says it will reflect the guidelines from the Marine Institute in any future aquaculture licence application.
BIM also says it has worked with the Marine Institute and Department to ensure the Galway Bay application was produced to the highest scientific standards.
A date for decision has still not been outlined by the Minister.
