Contracts have been signed for the construction a new Garda Divisional Headquarters in Galway and work is expected to commence shortly, according to a local TD.

JJ Rhatigan & Company has been awarded the contract for the development of the regional base, which will be developed on a site opposite Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in Murrough.

Fine Gael TD for Galway West, Brian Walsh, said the addition of a new headquarters would be a positive development for the east of the city and the broader western region.

The Minister for Justice and Equality has accepted an invitation from Deputy Walsh to visit Galway in the coming months, and will include a visit to the new Garda HQ with the Commissioner in her itinerary.

“A key step for this project was its inclusion in the stimulus plan earlier in the Government’s term, which ensured that adequate funding would be in place to bring it to fruition,” he said.

“Now contracts have been signed for its construction and work is expected to proceed on the site very soon. It is one of three similar projects that are poised to proceed nationally at a combined cost of €42 million.

“The new headquarters will be a major addition to policing infrastructure and resources in Galway, and it is important to note that it will be additional – both Mill Street and Salthill Garda Stations will be retained and will remain integral to the policing network following the completion of the new HQ,” he added.

“I’ve considered this to be a key capital investment project since my election, and I have worked with successive justice ministers to ensure that it remained a government priority.

“I’m very pleased that it has taken another step towards completion. The project will create employment in an important sector during the construction phase and will be a great asset for the city and the local community for generations to come,” said the Galway West TD.

Galway Bay fm newsroom -An application by the County Council to continue using a site at the Headford Road as a halting site has been turned down.
The County Council had applied to the City Council for planning permission to continue using the site at Carrowbrowne for a temporary halting site for a further two years.
The City Council has refused permission to keep using the Carrowbrowne site as a 15-bay halting site for three reasons.
It says that if it granted further permission, it would contravene a condition of previous planning permission.
This previous condition stated that the use of the site as a halting site would permanently cease and it would be re-instated.
The City Council also says it poses a public safety danger due additional traffic generated on an unimproved section of the N84.
Finally the City Council says the location of the halting site at Carrowbrowne would result in haphazard, disorderly development.
