City Council to appeal decision on Carrowbrowne halting site

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council is to lodge an appeal this week to the higher planning authority in relation to Carrowbrowne halting site.
The County Council refused the City Council permission to keep using the Carrowbrowne site as a 15-bay halting site for a further two years.
The County Council gave three reasons for the refusal of the City Council’s application.
It says if it granted further permission, it would contravene a condition of previous planning permission.
This previous condition stated that the use of the site as a halting site would permanently cease, and the land would be re-instated.
It says the site poses a public safety danger due to additional traffic generated on an unimproved section of the N84.
The County Council also said the location of the site would result in haphazard, disorderly development.
The City Council is to lodge an appeal with An Bord Pleanala in the coming week.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A six star cruise ship that had been scheduled to dock in the city next Tuesday has cancelled its visit due to poor weather conditions forecast for the region.
The 68 tonne Crystal Serenity vessel has one thousand passengers on board and 655 crew members.
The master of the ship has decided not to travel to the West coast due to forecasted conditions and will instead divert to Belfast and possibly Derry.
Last year, a sister ship was also forced to change path after poor weather prevented its passengers from disembarking in Galway.
Galway Harbourmaster Brian Sheridan says such port calls take three years to plan.
He told Keith Finnegan it’s disappointing that the city’s lack of deep water port means such vessels cannot be accommodated.
