Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s been revealed that a long-awaited Primary Health Care Center for Knocknacarra is off the cards – and will instead be built in the Shantalla area of the city.
The issue arose at this week’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, which heard that the Knocknacarra development was not feasible.
Knocknacarra was first listed as a priority for the development of a Primary Health Center in April 2008.
However, almost 8 years later, there’s been no movement on the project – and it’s now been revealed that the HSE considers the development off the table.
Instead, it will seek to develop a Primary Care Center at an existing HSE site at 25 Newcastle road in Shantalla.
At this weeks Health Forum West meeting, Chief Officer Tony Canavan told Councillor Catherine Connolly that the site was the most feasible choice.
The HSE says that a single location is envisaged for the west side of the city – and the Shantalla Clinic at 25 Newcastle Road would be replaced with a modern integrated facility.
The development is currently awaiting approval from the HSE National Property Committee – and it’s not yet clear when a decision might be reached.
