Galway Bay fm newsroom – City officials are being urged to push forward with efforts to hire an Irish Language Officer.
The matter was raised at this week’s meeting of the local authority by independent councillor Catherine Connolly.
It comes as the local authority is now under investigation by the Coimisinéir Teanga over its failure to implement parts of its Scéim Teanga.
The Commissioner has requested a written report from city hall on the matter which was submitted this week.
There has been no language officer at City Hall since January 2010 and efforts have been ongoing to have the position approved by the department since 2014.
City CEO Brendan McGrath told the meeting that further correspondence has been issued to the department in recent weeks seeking such sanction in a bid to meet obligations under the Irish Language Act.
Councillor Catherine Connolly says the Department must sanction the post to ensure such schemes can be delivered.
