Galway Bay fm newsroom – Landowners in the county are being advised that they can take ownership of the access roads into their land if they are concerned about illegal activity.
The matter was raised at Athenry/Oranmore district level, where Councillor Frank Kearney said farmers’ access roads are being used for sulkie races and illegal dumping.
Councillor Frank Kearney asked council officials to outline whether landowners have the right to put a gate or barrier on the end of roads which led solely into their lands.
Senior Engineer Evan Molloy says landowners in situations like this have the option of asking the council to abandon the road.
This would mean the farmers in question would be in charge of the maintenance of the road – but could also block it off to prevent illegal activity.
County Council officials say that to do this, agreement would have to be reached between all landowners who use a road before it could be abandoned by the local authority.
