Galway Bay fm newsroom – Island life on Inis Meain will disappear completely if more supports are not given to essential services there.
That’s according to Scoil Náisiúnta Inis Meain, which is participating in a meeting in Dublin next week to discuss serious concerns over education on the islands.
The one-teacher school says it’s at risk of closure due to a number of factors including a lack of appropriate supervision and policy.
The school lost its second teacher in 2012 when its enrolement dropped to six pupils, and has not managed to get sanction for a second teacher.
It says the Irish language on the island will die out if the school is left with only one teacher.
A meeting on the matter will take place in Buswell’s Hotel in Dublin at 1pm on Wednesday next.
It will be attended by a number of government ministers and representatives from island schools across the country.
