Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Minister for Foreign Affairs says the relevant departments will continue to work with locals in Annaghdown to resolve the situation regarding the cemetery.
There is only one space left in the current graveyard and efforts by the County Council to secure an alternative site nearby have been unsuccessful.
It’s understood the council would need 100 thousand euro to secure extra land, however it does not have the funds available.
Locals are concerned that they will not be able to bury loved ones close to deceased members of their families.
The current cemetery in Annaghdown is close to a national monument.
Senator Fidelma Healy-Eames says it’s within the remit of the Minister for Heritage Heather Humphries to allow an extension to the current graveyard.
Responding in the Seanad on behalf Minister Humphries, Minister Charlie Flanagan said he hopes that the situation can be resolved through more discussion.
