Galway Bay fm newsroom – Ten children were admitted to adult mental health services in Galway and the west last year.
The Mental Health Commission’s annual report reveals that 68 children were admitted to the Child & Adolescent Mental Health In-patient Unit at Merlin Park Hospital in 2014.
The Commission says it’s concerned about the level of vulnerable children still being admitted to ‘unsuitable’ or unsafe services.
Nationally, the number of children admitted to mental health services last year rose by just under 4 per cent to 431 – with more than one in five housed in adult units.
The Commission’s calling on the Government to put the necessary resources in place to meet the standards of the national mental health strategy.
MHC Chief Executive Patricia Gilheany says one child in an adult centre is one too many.
