It’s been claimed that a new 75 bed block under construction at UHG will add up to 30 new bed spaces to the hospital upon completion.
In Febuary, then Health Minister Leo Varadkar stated that the block would mean some extra beds – but was unable to put a number on his assertion.
Confusion has surrounded the 17 million euro development in recent months – with many politicans believing that the extension would result in few, if any, additional beds.
At this weeks meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, attendees were told that the new block is now projected to add between 25 and 30 beds upon completion.
Chief Operating Officer Ann Cosgrove stated that circumstances have changed since the new development was first planned – and UHG has adapted to meet demand.
However, forum member and Fine Gael City Councillor Padraig Conneely was entirely unconvinced.
He spoke of what he described as ‘media spin’ and demanded that the HSE admit that there would not be one single new bed.
Councillor Conneely says that he’s convinced there will be no new beds once the multi-million euro extension is completed.
