Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Clarinbridge conference has heard plans for a government refocus on diaspora beyond economic benefits alone.
The conference, which is being held in the Galway Oyster Festival tent is organised by Galway County Council with assistance from a number of community and family history organisations.
Joe McHugh, the Minister of State for the Diaspora and Overseas Development performed the official opening earlier today, welcoming over 170 people to the event.
In his address today, Minister McHugh emphasised the importance of developing and fostering connections with the Irish diaspora throughout the world.
Minister McHugh said that these connections had a much greater significance than economics alone.
County Cathaoirleach councillor Michael Connolly said there is hardly a family in Galway that has not been touched by emigration.
He urged the public to record the story of emigration across the city and county.
The conference theme is “Emigration and Our Galway County Diaspora”.
Speakers include Dr Gerard Moran, an authority on the Irish diaspora and John Grenham, co-presenter of the RTE “Genealogy Road Show” speaking about “ United Kingdom sources for Galway Emigrants”.
