Galway Bay fm newsroom – Rural communities across the county are being urged to set up a community alert texting system in a bid to avoid being targetted for burglaries.
Garda figures show a 35 percent decline in this type of offence over the first five months of this year, with 94 incidents recorded.
At county Joint Policing Committee level, members heard that Gardai have introduced an initiative whereby vulnerable premises or areas deemed high risk, are visited as part of an information campaign.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley commended the community alert scheme in Mountbellew, which he says should act as a model for others.
