Galway Bay fm newsroom – The higher planning authority has upheld a decision to refuse permission for a hostel in the city centre.
Connacht Accommodation Limited was originally refused planning permission by the City Council for the hostel at the junction of Forster Street and Bóthar Uí Eithir.
The company then appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála.
Connacht Accommodation Limited was hoping to change the former Anglo Irish Bank into a tourist hostel.
The company argued in an appeal to An Bord Pleanála that despite the residential zoning of the area, it’s predominantly commercial in character.
However, An Bord Pleanála says that the proposal for a hostel without adequate outside amenity space would seriously injure the residential amenities of the area.
The board also ruled that a proposed high level sign at the third floor of the building at Forster Street would be visually obtrusive.
