Galway Bay fm newsroom – Apple is being encouraged to sponsor a greenway between Athenry and Sligo.
Several groups have lodged submissions to the planning application by Apple for a new 850 million euro data centre in Athenry.
A decision was expected from the planning department of the County Council this week, but planners are seeking more information from Apple.
The development by Apple at Palmerstown, Toberroe and Derrydonnell includes a single-storey data centre, logistic and administration building, external standby generators and an electricity substation.
County planners have written to Apple seeking more information about a proposal to provide a workplace travel plan.
Planners also want to know why there is a necessity for 18 generators.
Among the submissions lodged with county planners is one from Senator Lorraine Higgins and one from the Western Rail Trail campaign.
They suggest that a greenway along the old rail line between Athenry and Sligo would allow for sustainable transport commuting by Apple staff.
Senator Higgins also suggests that if Apple were to sponsor such a greenway it could potentially have naming rights.
The Western Rail Trail Campaign says the route could be called the ‘Apple i-way’ and that Apple should consider it as part of its planning application.
