Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway’s Pádraic O’Conaire statue has been taken to a Dublin foundry where a bronze replica will be created for Eyre Square.
The new statue is expected to cost in the region of 50 thousand euro.
The original Padraic O’Conaire statue, which was unveiled in Eyre Square in 1935 by Eamon DeValera, has been housed in the city museum since it was removed from the square for protection reasons.
A mould of the original will be created by experts at the Cast Foundry in Dublin, and this will then be used to create a bronze replica.
City Council spokesperson Gary McMahon says the replica will be placed at Eyre Square by the end of the year.
