Galway Bay fm newsroom – An EU-wide study conducted by NUI Galway has released it’s final report calling for greater recognition of human rights in eviction cases across Europe.
The two year research pilot, ‘Promoting protection of the right to housing’, was led by Dr. Padraic Kenna in association with a number of EU universities and agencies.
The study found that most member states do not monitor or record evictions and EU courts have frequently failed to respect human rights in such cases.
The report also shows that evictions arising from increased rents are often greater than mortgage evictions, including in Ireland.
The final report sets out eighteen recommendations for EU states, ranging from protection and promotion of housing rights to improved housing policy and responsible lending.
Dr. Padraic McKenna says some countries in Eastern Europe have policies that could set an example for the rest of the EU.
