A convicted paedophile has moved into a residential estate in Salthill surrounded by families with young children, and less than one kilometre from three primary schools.
Violent rapist Patrick Naughton (60) moved into the area after serving an eleven-year sentence for regularly raping, buggering and threatening to kill his daughter from when she was nine years old.
Described by his victim as a “sick maniac”, Naughton – originally from Cinn Mhara in Camus, Connemara – spends most of his time sitting in his car in the driveway of the rented semi-detached house, where he was photographed by the Connacht Tribune this week.
Residents in the mature estate have spoken this week of their fear for their own children after discovering ‘by chance’ that child molester Naughton is living in their midst.
They have questioned also questioned why they were not told by authorities that a dangerous paedophile was living on their road – and who made the decision to allow him live there in the first place.
“We don’t want him here. Why is he here? This is a residential area with lots of young children and schools nearby,” one local said.
Neighbours have been warned through ‘word of mouth’, and residents have scheduled a meeting for Sunday night to discuss the matter.
The court case – heard in 2002 – ultimately led to the resignation of former Minister of State Bobby Molloy over claims that a “totally improper approach” had been made on behalf of Mr Molloy (or someone purporting to act on his behalf) to the Judge in the case, and that he sent 15 letters to the Minister for Justice.
